Over 50 Years of Service
Founded in 1959, Uni-Tec Consulting Engineers Inc. is proud of its success and service spanning over five decades. The company was launched on July 25, 1969, as Universal Technical Inc. by Robert J. Reese, Thomas D. Larson (later head of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and of the Federal Highway Administration), and Russell E. Horn (founder of Buchart-Horn Consulting Engineers). The initial mission of the State College company was to provide material testing and test boring services in Central Pennsylvania.
In 1976, Thomas F. Songer and Frank C. Welsh bought Universal Technical Inc. They continued to offer material testing services while expanding the business to include general civil engineering design. Four years later, the partners formed a new corporation, Uni-Tec Inc. Consulting Engineers and Technicians, to oversee the growing engineering business.
Patrick J. Ward joined Uni-Tec Inc. in 1981, assuming responsibility for the company’s technical functions. This allowed Songer to focus on sales, marketing, and client contacts. The company’s Municipal Services Division concentrated on design for water, transportation, and wastewater projects, while the Land Development Division flourished in the strong State College market. By the end of the 1980s, the company had grown to 70 employees, with equal staffing in the two divisions.
Ward became a Uni-Tec vice president and owner in 1985, focusing his talents on water/wastewater initiatives. John P. Conrad joined the company to lead project management in the rapidly expanding Municipal Services Division. Ward and Conrad purchased the division in September 1991 to carry forward their goals and objectives to provide services that contribute to a better quality of life.
As president and CEO, Ward continues as the driving force behind Uni-Tec’s current success and reputation for excellence through his commitment, dedication, and vision. His partners are Dennis P. Lingenfelter, who joined the company in 1991, Jeffrey R. Garrigan (1993), Andrew W. Elder (1999), John D. Ebeling (1986), John L. Bender (1988), David L. Peck (1988), and Michele A Aukerman (2000). Throughout the firm, staff members help to build strong relationships with every client, from initial contact through project completion and beyond.
Uni-Tec’s many longtime customers are evidence of over half a century of dedication to excellence.
